Depending on the circumstances of the visitor's engagement with TRIUMF, some additional training may be required.  Visitors should consult with their local TRIUMF collaborator/contact and/or the Facility Coordinator for the facility they will be visiting for details of any additional training above the compulsory training that may be required.

The following safety training courses are offered at TRIUMF:

CourseDescription
TRIUMF Safety Orientation
This is an online presentation that introduces workers to some of the major safety concerns and procedures at TRIUMF. It is mandatory that ALL staff, students, contractors, and visiting faculty being granted unsupervised access view this lesson. No unsupervised access to the site is allowed without first completing this course. The course has to be retaken every 5 years. The course is owned by OH&S
Basic Radiation Protection Training
Required for all access card holders. This training provides workers with the required knowledge for working in a nuclear facility. The course is owned by RPG.
Advanced Radiation Protection Training
Required training for all staff designated as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). A NEW is anyone who, in the course of his or her work, may receive a dose of radiation greater than the regulatory limit for that of the public. The course manual is available on the document server. This training is valid for five (5) years. The course is delivered by the Radiation Protection Group three times per year (January, May and September). If your supervisor sets this as required training for you, you will be contacted about attending a session when they are scheduled. The course is owned by RPG and has a validity of 5 years.
Radiation Protection Refresher Training
This course is required for all Nuclear Energy Workers who have not completed the Radiation Protection course in the last five (5) years. TRIUMF staff members can use their admin username to login to the training server and self enroll by selecting the course in the training catalog. The course is owned by RPG
Calibration Sources
Required training for anyone using or procuring radioactive calibration sources. For more information about this training please contact the Radiation Protection Group
WHMIS
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System(WHMIS) provides specific health and safety information about hazardous materials in the workplace defined as controlled products. This computer-based training is a legislated requirement for anyone working with controlled products. Many commonly used products fall into this category. To register for this course, complete the online portion linked to the left and then contact OHS to complete the training.
Forklift
This is required training for anyone operating a forklift on-site. For more information about forklift training contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.  Retraining is required 2 years (s) after the previous completion date
Crane Operator
This is required training for anyone working with overhead cranes. For more information about crane operator training contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Industrial RiggingThis is required training for anyone involved in rigging. For more information about industrial rigging training contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Lab/Chemical Safety
This is required training for people working in the Chemistry Labs on site. The course covers safe chemical use, handling, storage and emergency response procedures for laboratories. This training is presented by the UBC Department of Health, Safety and Environment. Please contact Facilities Manager (Life Sciences).
Fall Arrest
This is required where a worker’s job may involve work at a height (a) from which a fall of 3 m (10 ft) or more may occur, or (b) where a fall from a lesser height involves an unusual risk of injury. For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Electrical Safety
Basic elecrical safety training. Click the link to the left to complete this online course.  For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Transportation of Dangerous Goods
Transport Canada requires that any person who handles, offers for transport or transports dangerous goods must be adequately trained to do so. An outside company will supply this training. Please contact Manager, Logistics for more information. This course must be refreshed every 2 years. 
Fire Extinguisher Training
This training consists of two videos available online from the link to the left followed up by a practical session arranged through Occupational Health and Safety. For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Laser Safety
This is required training for anyone working with or around lasers. Click the link to the left to complete this online course. In addition there is a OJT section to be delivered by the Laser Safety Officer designated for the Laser system in question.For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Lead Safety
Required training for anyone handling lead shielding blocks.For more information please contact Radiation Protection Group.
Work Permits
This training is required for anyone interacting with the TRIUMF Work Permit system.  For more information contact the HRBP.
Cryogenics Safety
This training is required for anyone working with liquefied gases.  Click the link to the left to complete this online course. Click here for the practical component to be delivered by the supervisor. The Assessor is Bassam Hitti. On completion please send the document to the assessor. 
Personnel Safety Alarms
This training is for work in exclusion areas and covers the types of alarms and the proper response to the alarm. Training must be refreshed every 5 years. For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Exclusion Area Training
Training delivered by supervisors or facility coordinators to all workers accessing exclusion areas. Training must be refreshed every 2 years.  For more information please contact Radiation Protection Group.
Lockout/Tagout
Required training for anyone applying a lockout/tagout to equipment or machinery. Training must be refreshed every 5 years. For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
Supervisor Safety TrainingRequired training for all supervisors and visitor contacts. The training consists of an online lesson that must be refreshed every year. For more information contact the Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
QMS Training for Project Leaders
Required training for all project leaders, project engineers and project physicists. For information contact Director, Quality
QMS Training for Directors and Associates
Required training for the Director of TRIUMF, Deputy Director and Associate Lab Directors. For information contact Director, Quality

This training is now obsolete.
